One of the MAIN reasons patients may have difficulty getting numb is DEHYDRATION. Starting 4 days before your dental appointment, please ensure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of water. For example, if you are 200 pounds, you must consume 100 ounces of water a day for the 4 days leading up to your dental appointment! Starting 4 days ahead of time ensures your body has enough time to flush out all the toxins and give you some time to adjust so you aren’t using the restroom every 5 minutes (which will happen when you first start consuming water if you are chronically dehydrated!) Also- please note we are asking you to drink pure water...... not coffee, tea, soda, or carbonated water...... PLAIN WATER!!!! Being adequately hydrated ensures that your numbing medicine isn’t neutralized by your body too quickly, ensuring you have a comfortable dental treatment appointment!
Additionally, we ask that you follow our TUMS PROTOCOL for difficult anesthesia patients, which can be found below:
- Take 4 Tums & 800mg of Ibuprofen the night before your scheduled appointment.
- The morning of your appointment take another 4 Tums & 800mg of Ibuprofen 1 hour prior to your appointment
Being adequately hydrated AND following our TUMS Protocol gives us the best chances possible to ensure you have the most comfortable dental appointment possible! We take your comfort seriously and appreciate your help with this!
