It's important to understand that your Quicksplint appliance is a DIAGNOSTIC APPLIANCE. This appliance lets us evaluate your facial muscles, jaw joint, clenching, grinding, and possible tooth interferences with your bite. You may notice that your symptoms improve, don't change, or even worsen in some cases over the next two weeks of wear. Regardless of the response that you note, it tells us valuable information as to what may be happening in your jaw joints.
Important things to understand: This appliance is designed to decrease muscle and joint inflammation.
Potential Risks: In some cases, the reduction of inflammation in the jaw joints can allow the jaw to seat fully where it should ideally be anatomically. If this occurs, you may notice some bite changes or space between your upper and lower front teeth forming. This may indicate the need for Phase 2 treatment including. but not limited to:
- Bite balancing (Equilibration)
- Orthodontic tooth movement to correct bite
- Splint therapy (ADS or full coverage night guard)
- Restorative dentistry to improve bite
Wear Instructions:
- Brush and floss and insert Quicksplint about 1 hour before you are ready to go to sleep. We recommend inserting the appliance to give yourself time to adjust to it initially so it's less likely to disrupt you falling asleep.
- Wear appliance nightly for the next 2 weeks. Please bring your quick splint with you to your follow-up appointment with us in 2 weeks.
- It is normal and expected that your symptoms may feel slightly exaggerated the first 2-3 nights while we are focused on relaxing the muscles around the face and jaw joint.
Troubleshooting:
If your symptoms are worsening after the first 48 hours, please discontinue use and call us.
If you find that you are unable to keep the appliance in your mouth all night consistently, please keep trying. It may take a few nights to adjust to a new appliance. If after the first 5 nights you are still unable to keep your quick splint in place, it can mean that there are other underlying health issues preventing you from being able to tolerate the appliance.
If your impression material comes out of the appliance, SAVE THE WHITE PART OF THE APPLIANCE and call us so we can insert new material.
