Understanding Emergencies
What is a Dental Emergency?

In general, we define a dental emergency as any oral issue causing pain, bleeding, or discomfort that you cannot manage on your own. While oral traumas, such as accidents that result in knocked-out, loose, or cracked teeth, are the most evident dental emergencies, other issues can qualify as emergencies as well.
For instance, losing or dislodging a crown or filling is considered an emergency. If missing dental work is not replaced quickly, your vulnerable enamel could become damaged, leading to infection. Similarly, a severe toothache lasting more than 1-2 days is also classified as an emergency, as it may indicate a tooth infection that requires treatment, such as a root canal. Ignoring a toothache will likely lead to worsening pain.
Unsure whether your condition qualifies as a dental emergency? It’s always better to be safe than sorry! Call your Greenville dentist to discuss your situation with an expert.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency
- The first thing you should do is call our Greenville office immediately to let us know you’re coming in for an emergency appointment. Some conditions, such as a knocked-out tooth, require treatment within 1-2 hours to save the tooth.
- Next, if applicable, recover your missing tooth or dental work. Handle the tooth by the crown (top) rather than the root (bottom), and gently rinse it with warm water. If possible, replace it in the socket or store it in a small container of milk to keep it moist. Any missing dental work can be placed in a plastic bag.
- If you have time before your appointment, you can take a few steps to manage your pain and discomfort. If there is any bleeding, use clean gauze or cotton balls to absorb it. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen (Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help alleviate pain. You can also apply ice packs externally to your cheek to reduce pain and swelling, if necessary.
- Keep in mind that these treatments are only temporary solutions. It’s essential to visit Pearl Dental Studio to see Dr. Cash for an emergency appointment as soon as possible.
