Understanding Emergencies
What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is generally defined as any oral issue causing pain, bleeding, or discomfort that you cannot address on your own. While oral traumas—such as knocked-out, loose, or cracked teeth—are the most apparent emergencies, other dental issues can also qualify.
For instance, losing or dislodging a crown or filling is considered an emergency. Failing to replace missing dental work promptly can lead to damage to your vulnerable enamel and increase the risk of infection. Additionally, a severe toothache that persists for more than 1-2 days is a sign of a potential dental emergency. This could indicate a tooth infection that may require root canal treatment. If left untreated, the pain will only intensify.
If you're uncertain whether your condition qualifies as a dental emergency, it's always best to err on the side of caution. Contact your Five Forks dentist to discuss your situation with an expert.
Be Prepared
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
- If you're facing a dental emergency, the first step is to call our Five Forks office immediately to inform us that you need an emergency appointment. Some issues, like a knocked-out tooth, require treatment within 1-2 hours to increase the chances of saving it.
- If possible, recover your missing tooth or dental work. Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root (the bottom). Gently rinse it with warm water and try to place it back in the socket, or keep it moist by storing it in a small container of milk. Any lost dental work can be placed in a plastic bag.
- While you prepare for your visit, you can take a few measures to alleviate your pain and discomfort. If there’s any bleeding, use clean gauze or cotton balls to absorb it. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen (Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help manage pain. You can also apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek to reduce pain and swelling.
- Remember, these treatments are only temporary solutions. It's crucial to visit Pearl Dental Studio to see Dr. Cash for your emergency appointment as soon as possible.
- Call us at 864-214-1440 to let us know you're coming, and visit us at 117 Batesville Road Suite 202 Simpsonville, SC 29681 as soon as you can.
